SETTING THE YEAR OF WAR

Nearing the end of the 20^th century the earth’s environment was deteriorating. This was due, in most part, to the increase of human population : 9 billion planet wide. Faced with this growing problem the Earth Federation had to build upon the only option left to them :  the colonization of space.

Although this was the last hope to save the almost ruined eco system it was not met with open arms. Following the announced "Space Colony" plan numerous grievance petitions were filed. Some citizens of the Earth Federation did not want to leave the lands and homes that they had known for so long. Some of these citizens wanted to know if they would be compensated for the loss of property ,the loss of stability. But the enormity of  the space colony plan was the only hope to save the earth’s eco system and had locked the federation into a role of a harsh ruler. All Citizens not deemed essential to earth operations  would be forcibly removed from earth and sent into space.

The earth federation now had the right to choose who would be moved off planet. And in doing so became the most powerful governing body on the earth. Not only did the earth federation choose who would reside in a colony they also managed and gathered all expenses, resources, and labor forces for building the colonies. Along with these and other such activities the terrestrial earth federal Government was becoming enormously powerful day by day. 

It took approximately half a century, until the first space colony was completed, then mankind started to immigrate to outer space. At this point the Gregorian calendar was changed to reflect this endeavor.

Then mankind kept expanding the residence sphere to outer space, steadily. Each colony , 7 in total, became self-governing communities. These new communities were called “a side ". The immigration into space advanced, until half of all mankind lives in outer space. 

In UC 0050 80% of the earth population lived in space and all immigration to the colonies has stopped. The 20% remaining on earth have excused themselves from immigration to the colonies. The human population has grown to almost 11 billion. by UC 0050.  

 In the year UC 0051 the terrestrial federation has become the sole ruling body of the earth and the colonies. The  friction between the terrestrial Federal Government and the space colonies, the Spacenoids (スペースノイド), begins. 

The Earth Federation had set themselves up as an elite society on earth. Angering most everyone living in space. On side 3 Zeon Zum Daikun provided a voice for the colonies. Lecturing on the politics of and criticizing the policy of federation.  Daikun  not only stated these problems but reinforced the idea of space colonization. Not just to prevent the pollution of the earth but he also believed that mankind must move into space. For humans to advance to the next stage of evolution they must break free of the bonds of their mother planet.

In UC 0068 Zeon Zum Daikun abruptly dies of illness. Degin Zabi who was Daikun’s aide became 2nd generation prime minister. Explained by Degin Zabi that Daikun, on his deathbed, named him as his successor. Many who have remained loyal to Daikun’s beliefs believed that he was poisoned by Zabi. This rumor grew, but the truth of Daikun’s death is not certain.

So in UC 0069 Zabi designates side 3 the Principality of Zeon, placing himself as king and declares Zeon a new Country. Zabi begins his rule by eliminating any remnants of Daikun’s supporters and family. Daikun’s children, Casaval Rem Daikun and Artesia Daikun, are spirited away from side 3 before the suffer the same fate as Daikun’s supporters.

From 0069.10 to 078.12.  See Universal  Century timeline for actual dates. Zeon begins construction of the Principalities weapons of war. These ranged from Space warships, terrain, atmospheric and sea based weapons. Of all of these new weapons the most versatile and deadly was the Mobile Suit.

 In UC 0074 Based on the science of  Dr. Minovsky the Principality constructs the first combat worthy mobile suit the Zaku I.  

In researching the new Minovsky-Ionesco reactor  the principality not only discovered a new elemental particle that would enable them to create more efficient weapons they also made the discovery that Minovsky particles, when released, disrupt all radio and video communications. Making it impossible to use radar in battle. Now that all battles will need to depend on “line of site” targeting  the principality, Zeon in creating the Mobile Suit, has a devastating weapon.
